SUNDAY

Intermediate Talmud – Masechet Bava Kama

Responsibility and Liability of the Individual in the Public Domain

Rav Hanan Schlesinger

4:00-6:00pm (Israel)/ 9:00-11:00am (US East Coast)

Course Details

Our study will focus on the first part of the third chapter of Tractate Bava Kama of the Babylonian Talmud, which is found in the order of Nezekin (Damages). The first subject to come up revolves around a situation in which someone creates an obstacle in the public domain by way of his own body or by way of an object he places there or that he owns and that finds its way there. If damage is then caused to a passer-by, under what circumstances does the first person bear financial responsibility. The second subject concerns a collision between two people or domesticated animals in the public domain in which injury is caused to one by the other. Financial liability is dependent – among other factors – on the relationship between the degree of precaution that was taken in light of the degree of precaution judged to be obligatory.

The two-hour Zoom sessions will be divided between chavruta study of the texts on the one hand, and on the other hand, frontal presentation and class discussion. The frontal presentations will deal both with the skills of critical textual analysis and the legal/moral principles that arise from the texts, as well as – when applicable – the philosophical and theological issues suggested therein.

This is in intermediate level class. It is for women who have learned Talmud before to some extent.

Course Details

In a world that equality is such a central value, women’s place in Halachic Judaism raises a lot of questions. What mitzvot are women exempt from and why? Are women encouraged to learn Torah as men are? Should women be reciting a zimmun? Starting from the verses and halachic discussion in the Talmud, we will go through the different sources and rulings to help shape a better understanding of the value of equality in Halachic Judaism.

Though the class is only one hour and there will be no assigned chavruta time, questions and discussion on the sources is encouraged.

16 sessions beginning February 4

Alumnae Testimonials

״I've been studying at Nishmat’s Online Beit Midrash for over 2.5 years. My experience thus far has been incredible. The in-depth learning has exceeded my expectations. I've been looking for Talmudic studies for women for a long time and Nishmat has provided me exactly with what I was looking for and more. I feel that the Torah we learn has changed me as a person. I feel closer to Hashem, to Am Israel, and I feel wiser. Teachers are wise and open-minded. My chavrutot have been from all ages and all walks of life, which I really value. Everyone feels comfortable and accepted no matter which level they are starting from. Overall, it has been the most inspiring and empowering experience, and I hope to continue to participate for many years to come.״

Miriam Rosenberg, Online Beit Midrash Participant 2025

״As a Jewish educator, I know the importance of learning in group settings. As the Talmud says, we learn from our teachers, our colleagues and our students. The weekly hour I dedicate to learning with Navit literally is one of the highlights of my learning. To virtually sit with other women discussing halacha and the intricacies of women's obligations, helps me learn much more than law - it grows my understanding of how the rabbis minds' work and their process of interpretation. It has been a wonderful experience!״

Sandra Lilienthal,
Online Beit Midrash Participant 2025

״I am so grateful for the opportunity to learn Halacha through Nishmat’s online Beit Midrash. Through this platform, I have been able to deepen my understanding and love for our halachot and traditions. The standard of teaching and content in each lesson are very high at Nishmat. The sources presented alongside each lecture are deep, curious and very relevant. The Rabbis and Rabbaniot presenting the course actively encourage each of us as students to look deeper into the sources, stringencies, leniencies and practical application of the halacha that we are learning. The discussions are engaging and vibrant and it is so interesting and endearing to learn with other women from so many different countries, time zones, backgrounds and practices while discussing how we practically apply these halachot at home and in our daily lives.״
