Course Details
Our study will focus on the middle third of the third chapter of Tractate Baba Kama of the Babylonian Talmud, which is found in the order of Nezekin (Damages). The first subject to come up deals with legitimate and illegitimate uses of the public domain and to what degree legitimate usage exempts the individual from financial responsibility for damages caused to others. The second subject concerns a collision between two people or domesticated animals in the public domain in which injury is caused to one by the other. Financial liability is dependent – among other factors – on the relationship between the degree of precaution that was taken in light of the degree of precaution judged to be obligatory. The third subject is involuntary manslaughter, its definition and punishment.
The two-hour Zoom sessions will be divided between hevruta study of the texts on the one hand, and on the other hand, frontal presentation and class discussion. The frontal presentations will deal both with the skills of critical textual analysis and the legal/moral principles that arise from the texts, as well as – when applicable – the philosophical and theological issues suggested therein.
This is in intermediate level class. It is for women who have already studied in-depth at least one full chapter of the Babylonian Talmud or one full tractate of Daf Yomi. Students are expected to be familiar with the 50 pivotal Aramaic words that direct the flow and logic of Talmudic discourse.

Course Details
In a world that equality is such a central value, women’s place in Halachic Judaism raises a lot of questions. What mitzvot are women exempt from and why? Are women encouraged to learn Torah as men are? Should women be reciting a zimmun? Starting from the verses and halachic discussion in the Talmud, we will go through the different sources and rulings to help shape a better understanding of the value of equality in Halachic Judaism.
Though the class is only one hour and there will be no assigned chavruta time, questions and discussion on the sources is encouraged.

Course Details
Our halacha class, that meets once a week, looks into understanding not just the bottom line of practical halacha, but, in addition, we try to learn the sources and process that leads to the halachic ruling. Each class is accompanied with a source sheet (in Hebrew) which we learn together in class – from the Gemera to the Shulchan Aruch and later Poskim.
This term, we will begin with a few classes dealing with some halachot of the Chagim. Then, after we return from the Sukkot break, we will begin an intensive study of the laws of Mukzah on Shabat. This is an involved and interesting set of laws that hopefully will enrich not only our Torah study, but also our keeping of Shabbat.

Course Details
This course continues our in-depth exploration of the life of King David, based primarily on the Book of Samuel as well as parts of Psalms and Chronicles, using midrash and classic rabbinic commentary. Last year’s course focused on David’s life prior to becoming king; this year we will focus on his consolidation of the kingdom, his successes, and his failures. No prior knowledge is needed for this year’s course.
During Elul, we will be studying psalms related to the liturgy of Elul, Rosh Hashana, and Yom Kippur.
